Remembering Syvester Turner

Today, we mourn the sudden loss of Congressman Sylvester Turner.  A lifelong Houstonian and dedicated public servant, Turner was a member of the Texas House from 1989-2016 representing District 139. From 2016-2024, he served as the Mayor of Houston. Most recently, Turner served as a member of the US House of Representatives for Texas’ 18th Congressional District and was appointed to the Homeland Security Committee and the Science, Space, and Technology Committee.

Turner was often leading the charge on social issues and championing progress. During his 27 years in the Texas Legislature, he was a stalwart ally to the LGBTQIA+ community. Turner vocally opposed discriminatory legislation and stood firmly against attempts to marginalize transgender Texans.

During his tenure as Mayor of Houston, he created the city’s first LGBTQ Task Force, allowing queer and trans Houstonians to play a more active role in the policymaking processes of the city.

Equality Texas extends our heartfelt condolences to Turner’s family, friends, and constituents across Houston, Texas House District 139, and Texas Congressional District 18. Texas has lost an incredible leader. As we mourn his loss, let us also celebrate his remarkable life and achievements. Congressman Turner’s legacy will endure through his acts of compassion, inclusivity, and tireless advocacy. His work in public service will continue to inspire future generations of leaders. We honor his memory by rededicating ourselves to the values he championed throughout his life.

Rest peacefully, Congressman Sylvester Turner. Your impact will be felt for years to come.

Help us fight for a better Texas for all Texans!

All of the work we do would not be possible without the support of our community and allies.

Thanks!
