Today, Equality Texas joins state and national leaders in the LGBTQ equality movement in announcing our opposition to the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh for a lifetime appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court.

We’ve looked at Kavanaugh’s record, and the stakes could not be higher. If we’re to have any chance of stopping his confirmation, it’s going take every one of us fighting with all we’ve got. That’s why we’re joining forces with LGBTQ organizations around the country to stop this nomination — and it’s why we’re asking for your help.
Kavanaugh’s record shows he’s likely to undermine hard-fought protections for the LGBTQ community, for women, for workers and consumers, and for people of color. Take a look:
- Allowing religious refusals: Kavanaugh’s record suggests that he favors a radical re-interpretation of the First Amendment as sanctioning discrimination under the guise of religion.
- Limiting fundamental rights: Kavanaugh’s view of the Constitution as limited by “tradition” is code for turning the clock back to a time when many of us were denied personal autonomy and liberty. “Tradition” allowed government to regulate, and even criminalize, profoundly personal decisions about sexual intimacy, whether and when to become a parent, and the right to marry.
- Favoring the privileged few: In case after case, Kavanaugh has ruled against individual workers and consumers and in favor of the wealthy and the powerful.
It is clear that Judge Kavanaugh’s record is not that of a neutral and fair-minded judge who can be trusted to administer equal justice under the law.
