New Poll Shows Increasing Support for Transgender Rights

Austin, TX (June 12, 2019) – New data released by national polling organization Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) shows majority support across the country to protect transgender Americans from discrimination.

More than six in ten (62%) Americans say they have become more supportive toward transgender rights compared to their views five years ago. By contrast, about one-quarter (25%) say their views are more opposed compared to five years ago.

About three-quarters (76%) of Democrats report they have become more supportive of transgender rights in the last five years, compared to 64% of independents and only 47% of Republicans. Notably, increased support crosses ideological divides within the parties. Conservative Republicans (40%) stand out as the only ideological group with less than half reporting increased support for transgender rights.

“This poll shows that as Texans and Americans learn the stories of their fellow transgender citizens, the overwhelming majority want to make sure that every person in our state and in this country is treated with dignity and respect. The only way to stop and most importantly protected from violence,” said Samantha Smoot, Interim Executive Director for Equality Texas.

“We will continue our fight to achieve full equality for transgender Texans and to do everything we can to educate fellow Texans, including elected officials, to ensure no one faces discrimination for being who they are in our state,” said Lou Weaver, Transgender Programs Coordinator for Equality Texas.
