Steering Committees
What is a steering committee?
A regional steering committee is a group of committed volunteers who provide organizing leadership to elevate Equality Texas’s work. A Steering Committee and its co-chairs support Equality Texas 501(c)(3) and Equality Texas Action 501(c)(4) at the local level. This support may include funding and resource development; new member recruitment; volunteer management for Pride celebrations, advocacy, and rapid response; educational programs; or community networking.
What does a steering committee do?
Development
In cooperation with Equality Texas staff, steering committee members can provide support to local development events. Established events include Love Equality and Black Tie Dinner (Dallas) and the Stuver Social and annual Equality Texas Gala (Austin). Members may also research grant opportunities, make connections between Equality Texas and potential funders, gather silent auction items from across the state, or co-sponsor a table with other steering committee members at the Equality Texas annual gala.
Outreach
Steering committee members can attend community and networking events as representatives of Equality Texas, organize socials, or sponsor entry-level educational events for potential donors and advocates.
Policy and Advocacy
Steering committee members can work closely with Field and Government Affairs staff to support regional advocacy trainings, attend All In for Equality Advocacy Day, attend hearings and school board meetings, and participate in rapid response actions to emergent events.
Pride Tabling and Participation
Steering committee members can table at regional Pride celebrations and act as liaisons between Equality Texas and local Pride organizers.
